What is Libertarianism? A Book Review

All of us in the United States have friends that are libertarians. After all, it appears that nearly 10 to 20% of our population during any given election call themselves libertarians. And this group of individuals often is the deciding factor in elections because they become the swing voters. But, if you are wondering what it is to be a libertarian, then I have a very good book that I like to recommend to you. The name of the book is;

"Libertarianism in One Lesson" by David Berglund, 1977

There was a book on Libertarianism which was translated in Polish and it caused a revolution in 1988 and 1989. 1990 communism was ousted in socialist nations collapsed due to the thought that "you own yourself." Libertarians believe; "No one has the right to force you to do what is not in your best interests," each person owns themselves - you cannot force others to do what is against their best interests. However, you must take responsibility for yourself.

There is a chapter on cooperation versus force in the book that is quite good. The book made me think about the possibility that perhaps, government could work as conglomerate franchised module in the service business for things like trash, power, enforcement, military, and dog catchers. I definitely enjoyed this quote; "If people are inherently good, you don't need a government and if the people are evil you don't dare have one," and "Government is us and they are no more noble than the bureaucrats in it," and since everyone in government comes from the population, if there are any problems, it's already our fault.

In fact, the book was full of great quotes, here's another one; "A government agency which falsely justifies actions against a citizen is not an acceptable government" in some ways one could say that Government is not real, it's a lie we all agree to live by, a fictitious entity, worth nothing without our consent. How can you have a social contract when government legislators and regulators make onerous and restricting laws against freedom and liberty? We must respect the rights of all; there is no superior human being in our government. Anyway, I think you would enjoy the discussion that went on throughout this book, it will really make you think.

E-Mails: "Congressional Reform Act of 2010."

Here is a proposal to promote a "Congressional Reform Act of 2010." It would contain eight provisions, all of which should be strongly endorsed by the constituents of the members of both houses.
Many of you will say, "this is impossible." Remember, congress has the lowest approval of any entity in government and now is the time for Americans to join together to reform congress - the entity that supposedly represents us.

We need a senator to introduce this bill in the US senate and a representative to introduce a similar bill in the US house. Please contact your senators and congressmen.

If all else fails, something like this needs to be added to the ballot for the next election.

After what's been going on for the past few years, surely the American public will vote for these changes.

Congressional Reform Act of 2009
1. Term Limits: 12 years only, one of the possible options below.

A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms


2. No Tenure / No Pension:
A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.


3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security: All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people.


4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all Americans..


5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.


6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.


7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people.


8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/10.

PLEASE REMEMBER: The American people did not give all these perks to congressmen; congressmen gave all these sweetheart deals to themselves. We need to take back the Congress.


Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

Merry Christmas from Al Qaida

Northwest Airlines flight 253 delivered a gift of terror to the U.S.A. on Christmas Day. As it was approaching its destination a terrorist on board attempted to explode the bomb that was hidden in his underwear. The fact that the bomb fizzled and no one was injured was indeed a Christmas miracle. The 300 passengers that were on board that day, no doubt are thanking the Good Lord for his favor and the quick action of those who subdued and detained the bomber.

Of course, our President ordered an investigation into how the State Department allowed the would-be bomber a visa and then, in typical Obama-style, blamed the prior administration because they set up the system. When will our President start taking the blame for his own administration's failings? The President sets the tone and, in this case, has clearly signaled to his team that there is no war on terror. He has succeeded in punishing the intelligence agencies for their work under the prior administration and has sent them the signal that it is more important to be politically correct than to protect their country. His reaction to the Fort Hood incident shows his complete denial of a war against Muslim extremists and perhaps even his sympathies to their cause as he is now allowing Sheik Khalid Mohammad a trial in the New York Federal Court.

The lessons of Vietnam have not been learned by this administration. War is not something that can be pursued half-heartedly. Unfortunately, President Obama is more interested in passing a healthcare bill that most of America deplores than protecting us from our enemies, both foreign and domestic. The President has plenty of excuses, including high unemployment and recession, which do not justify his failure to pursue the enemy with all his available power rather than treat the problem as if it were a law enforcement activity. The same can be said for the war in Afghanistan. The President is lukewarm on protecting the American people and should be spewed from office. His loyalties are obviously conflicted in this matter and that is impairing his judgment.

We continue to find more and more of the detainees released from Guantanamo Bay back on the battlefield, the latest graduating from a rehabilitation program in Yemen. Is there any sense of reason left in this administration? Does anyone in the administration even remember the magnitude of the attacks of 9-11-2001? Keep praying America, because God is our protector, whereas clearly our government is not.

Health Care Reform Bill Will Cover Illegals

Everyone remembers President Obama declaring that public insurance options would not cover illegal immigrants and Rep Joe Wilson shouting "You lie!"

There have also been numerous attempts by House and Senate Republicans to add amendments to the bills with specific language denying public finance insurance for illegal immigrants. All of those attempts have been defeated by the Democrats. The congressional research service has stated that HR 3200, the basis of most of the health care bill's language, would cover illegal immigrants.

You can probably expect to see some language make it into drafts of final bills excluding public dollars to fund insurance for illegal immigrants as most voters are against providing it even if they are for some form of public option. Which does not explain the Democrats insistence that no such language is in the various bills or President Obama declaring that his plan would not cover those people in the country illegally.

Once language is inserted into the bill, then Americans do not have to worry about providing publicly funded insurance to illegal immigrants right?

Wrong!

In 1982, the Supreme Court ruled in Plyler v. Doe that benefits offered to the general public could not exclude certain groups of people even people in the country illegally.

Texas had a law that denied funds for public education to children in the country illegally. The Supreme Court ruled in Plyler v. Doe that the Texas state law was in violation of the constitution stating that "as illegal immigrant children are people "in any ordinary sense of the term", and therefore had protection from discrimination".

The President is either trying to mislead the American people or is ignorant of the fact that in Plyler v. Doe, the Supreme Court insured that the legislature would not be able to stop illegal immigrants from getting free or subsidized insurance if it is offered to the public in general.

This alone is enough reason to oppose any public option to be included in healthcare reform.

The next time you hear a politician say that illegals will not be covered under a public option, feel free to shout out either "You lie!" or "You are ignorant!". However, shouting out "You are ignorant" is probably closer to the truth.

Thought Provoking Book - Makes You Go "Hmm"

Ok, a couple of disclaimers right up front: 1)SuperFreakonomics is a follow-up book to the authors' first book - Freakonomics. I didn't read Freakonomics, and as it turns out, you don't have to read the first one to get the second one - these aren't vampire novels; 2) More than likely, I would not have read Super Freakonomics if I hadn't been sent a copy to review. Why? The word "freakonomics" is way to close to the word "economics" which, for a creative person like me, is a topic much like a bottle of wine - puts me right out. But I will tell you this - freakonomics is MUCH more interesting than plain, old economics. Here's why:

In spite of the overly witty full title - SuperFreakonomics Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance - the book is actually a fascinating tale of how economics plays into even the most bizarre areas of modern life. I guess that is what authors Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner wanted to convey with that extravagant title - they should have just let the content speak for itself, but I know, its all about getting people to OPEN the book, I get it, really.

So anyway, back to Super Freakonomics. I really enjoyed this book! I did snooze a bit through Chapter 3, but for the most part, here are two guys with nothing to gain except royalties. They don't seem to have an overt political bend. They don't seem to want to convince me that there is only one right way to do things. They're not selling me anything I don't already own. But what they are doing is taking incongruent subjects, like Al Gore and Mount Pinatubo (ok, not TOTALLY incongruent), prostitutes and Santa Claus, real estate agents and pimps, and telling me that they do actually have something in common and here's how it effects my life.

You see, we tend not to draw the comparisons Steven and Stephen have drawn in Super Freakonomics. Most of us don't want to see these connections or can't because we only really look at the surface of things. The Steves have penetrated that surface and dove down deep. They've brought to light some things that make you go, "hmm." Such as the hand-washing rate of doctors - YES YOU HEARD ME. You'll have to read that chapter for yourself as its quite disturbing.

All in all, its a thought-provoking book that I highly recommend you read. If for nothing else than to give you a little perspective on the world around you, how we got here and where we can hope the future brings us. There's a lot of what I believe is truth, in this book. The chapter on Global Warming is really a good one. But so is the Monkey chapter.

Levitt and Dubner have clearly done a ton of research and another ton of analysis. Typical economists... But untypically, they've written this book in such a way to make it all relevant to what's happening in our world today. Thumbs up.

The Hidden Approach of Socialism

Socialism is revolutionary not because it proposes the dominance of a class, but because of its principles of radical reshaping not only the politic but also the human and spiritual life. The evil it addresses, become universal threats since the Socialism is a response to local snapshots, but as a universal directives charged of sufficient authority to remake the world in the form of a hypothetical future perfection.

An addition perspective is the meaning we give to the word "revolution" which in the socialist point of view is to slowly introduce changes into the society by a soft approach and using reasonable reasons. Socialism has always used reasonable but temporary issues to come to power.

It presents itself as the good solution which take care both to the charity and to the spiritual need of people. It subtly defends the needs of the marginalized; creating a new world of hate against those more privileged.

It's a diabolical creation, which surely cannot bring any blessing to the people. From a certain perspective hate may be revised as a temporary knowledge to better understand what is the real perfection people have to search for and, at the same time, it force anyone to fight for avoiding people to fall into the trap of "good intentions" that socialism proposes to anesthetize the possibility of a reaction, which in its sense would be illogical.

Today the socialists presented themselves as open minded gentlemen, charming and elegant, conquering the mass with few slogans, interested on the poverty, supported by some Church branches, smiling and shaking hands (and going to wash them immediately), like a sort of laic popes. The subversion they generated is like an incantation of weak minds and this action is well supported by "those intellectuals" which, like theologians listed the new commandments as a base of a brand new society.

Although we race towards the end of this ideology, we should however be aware of the strong and deep foundation it has got in the people minds and understand that is still capable of delivering economic and spiritual pressure to destroy the society.

Anyone should remember and learn from the history and think that we are not saved from this virus in the slow and continual dramatic demolition of nations, especially the self-confidence.

Socialism destroys creativity, culture, innovation as well as research and this is done with the support of men.

No one can think being a good person if, in front of this planned destruction, takes no position. The evil we see cannot be ignored by pretending to leave in peace, just for peace itself, as this creates the most valid condition for the worst dictatorship.

We do know that we will be more consistent in not being ignorant and demonstrating a strong dedication as well as commitment to the society to build a robust foundation to prevent any type of Socialism being introduced among us.
